Down on the Street
“I am not a photographer who seeks to document events or social issues. Instead, I have simply ventured into the city, following my instincts and capturing images from a personal perspective.”
"Down on the Street" features photographs by Takehiko Nakafuji taken on the streets of cities around the world, from Chicago to Paris, Santiago de Chile, Berlin, Barcelona, Seoul, Hong Kong, Prague, Shanghai, Havana, Ho Chi Minh City, and, of course, Tokyo and New York. In the book, Nakafuji arranges his photographs without reference to time or place, allowing the images to unfold their inexplicable power that transcends conventional meaning and explanation. Shot spontaneously and on the street, Nakafuji mixes genres, subjects, and forms, moving from stunning cityscapes and portraits to Moriyama-esque photographs of surfaces and posters, defining moments, and fashion magazine-style snapshots.
“All I have been able to do, and will continue to do, is to put myself in the streets, walk as much as I can, and take snapshots of the people and unexpected sights I encounter as my body reacts to them (…)
It is my greatest hope that, within the collection, the light of the years that have passed through the city will resonate with one another, creating a representation of another world that is realistic and evocative.”
