Day For Night
“Day for Night,” published by LA-based Deadbeat Club Press, is the first monograph of the legendary Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata.
As the title implies, Shibata’s images—originally taken between 1980 and 1988—construct an interplay between light and shadow, day and night. Over the course of the book, photographs taken during the night slowly progress into pictures taken during the day. In Shibata’s hands, intense light sources transform everyday urban scenery into unfamiliar shapes, and both nighttime and daytime become new territory.
“I feel like this is a new interpretation of how I moved my subject from the night to the day. It even feels like some kind of destiny.”
― Toshio Shibata
