Dandaka
Vasantha Yogananthan’s “Dandaka” is the fourth chapter in his photographic re-telling of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, a seven-chapter tale of Hindu mythology first recorded in 300 BC. In the epic, Dandaka is the name of a forest where many adventures of the divine prince Rama take place on his quest to rescue his wife Sita.
Yogananthan has begun traveling to India to photograph the project in 2013. He retraces the paths taken by Ramayana’s heroes, blending and blurring reality and myth. In addition to photography, he employs multiple other techniques, from hand-painted pictures to illustrated photographs, to relay the timeless story in multiple layers.
A Myth of Two Souls will be published in seven photobooks between 2016-2020, one per chapter of the epic.
