And In Its Place, Another
Shot in places in California, Mexico, Europe and the Middle East, Kovi Konowiecki’s photobook “And In Its Place, Another” forms a visual exploration that is less about place than about emotion, intuition and visual association. While the photographs depict individuals and communities caught between belonging, abandonment and desolation, Konowiecki managed to create intensely personal images rather than a purely political series by relying on his own emotional connections rather than relationships between places and subjects. Visually dowsed in black and darkness, the images linger on long after closing the book, calling and beckoning to take another look at the liminal places Konowiecki has captured.
“I’ve seen shadows,
the bad moods of time,
things go dark, and light again,
as if changed,
renewed.
a white fence decays
stained with remnants of leaves and vines,
something there before,
and in its place,
another.”
