Akatsuki
Japanese photographer Michi Nakano’s first photobook “Akatsuki” is a caleidoscopic exploration of daily life in all its facets, dedicated to the minuities that form the whole. Nanako photographs ephemeral moments – the brittle wings of a moth, a pleasing cloud formation, hairs caught in the teeth of a comb – with the same dedication as scenes with more important, such as his father in a hospital bed, the soft feet of a newborn baby, his father’s urn, his aging mother putting on lipstick. Through careful framing and deliberate use of color, Nakano’s pictures invite the reader to treat each of the many moments in the book as special, and to reflect on importance and meaning of their connections.
“It’s cruel that time only goes forward.”
