A Place
In his series “A Place,” Japanese photographer Hideki Makiguchi sets out to interrogate the very texture of existence. Though the places he photographs—from parking lots to street corners, grassy patches, open areas and other nondescript locations—may appear empty or vacant at first sight, they slowly reveal a strange sense of presence.
Makiguchi’s photographs are rooted in sensations that exist in different realms than the purely physical world, in the perception of ephemeral, wavering qualities that are unique to certain places. “A Place” draws out certain essences beyond the boundaries of photography and reveals unknown terrorities both outside and within the photographer.
