The Forgotten People
A former member of Magnum Photos, Lu Nan’s photographic works are images which convey and examine the very heart of the human condition. Photographing the psychiatric patients in China during the late 1980s and early 90s, Lu Nan’s photobook _The Forgotten People _is a compelling and powerful documentation of the lives within the wards. Photographed in black and white, the collection of images within this publication brings forth a powerful narrative of a failed normalcy within the structures of society only acceptable within the confines of the ward. Guiding the viewer’s gaze along the captured photographs, Lu Nan’s imagery blurs the lines of discomfort into a viewing experience that is unavoidably absorbing, opening up worlds both from the past and present that are otherwise kept separate from our day to day public lives.
This publication also includes text by Lu Nan only available in Japanese.
