What I Am Doing

Eiko YAMAZAWA

Publisher: Akaaka Art Publishing

The publication “What I am Doing” comprehensively traces the career and artistic output of Japanese photographer Eiko Yamazawa.

Born in 1899, Yamazawa was one of Japan’s pioneering women photographers, publishing and exhibiting regularly after studying photography in the US in the 1920s. Her work spans several genres, beginning with portraiture, street and documentary photography and reaching into abstract, painting-like images. Divided into five chapters, the book provides a detailed account of her artistic journey, with introductory texts, captions, detailed essays both by Yamazawa herself as well as Kazuko Hamachi, Tsukasa Ikegami, and Yoshiko Suzuki, a bibliography, and a detailed table of works (all texts in Japanese and English translation).

The catalogue is published on occasion of the eponymous exhibitions at the Nishinomiyashi Otani Memorial Museum and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
