Ueno Eki no Makuai ("Intermission at Ueno Station")
During Japan’s Showa era, Ueno Station connected Tokyo with the northern part of Japan. It was the gateway between the modern city and Japan’s more rural areas. Every day, Ueno Station was the stage for smaller and bigger dramas. Seiichi Motohashi’s photobook “Intermission at Ueno Station” (first published in 1982) captures the atmosphere of the Showa-era Ueno Station and documents the little stories that unfold as people leave, people arrive, send off loved ones, return to Tokyo, those who wait and wait, those who work at the station…
This edition, published by Heibonsha in 2012 (the 130th anniversary of Ueno Station’s opening), is a newly revised version of the photobook classic.
The book includes essays by Seiichi Motohashi, filmmaker Noriaki Tsuchimoto, and Kiyoshi Nakata (all texts only included in Japanese language).
