Stay
In her work, Dutch photograper Charlotte Dumas concerns herself with the relationships between animals and humans in the confines of present day society.
In 2012, Dumas began photographing the native horse breeds still living in Japan. Stay collects her intimate portraits, for which the artist travelled to eight different locations throughout Japan, from Hokkaido prefecture far in the North to the islands of Okinawa.
Yonaguni, Miyako, Tokara, Kiso, Taishu, Misaki, Noma, Dosanko — their hidden legacies, their regional characters, the nature of their relationship with us humans. Their individual souls.
“She creates portraits that burn into the soul, because when she is looking at the horses, they are looking back.” (Stacey Clarkson James)
