Yoshihiko Ueda, the great Japanese photographer, has begun taking photographs of forests more than twenty years ago, in forests believed holy by American Indians.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake occured in March 2011, Ueda stepped into the deep forests on the island of Yakushima, a World Heritage site. The resulting photos, which capture and emphasize the forest’s many life-forms and layers of time, are collected in his photobook Materia.
