Forest: Impressions and Memories, 1989–2017
It was in 1989 that Yoshihiko Ueda had a fateful encounter with the sacred Quinault Rain Forest in America’s Pacific Northwest and became fascinated with forests.
For his new photobook “Forest: Impressions and Memories, 1989–2017”, Ueda revisited this Quinault forest as well as the cedar forests on the Japanese island of Yakushima and the primeval forests of Kasuga-yama in Nara. A fourth section of the book is titled “Yakushima Memories” and consists of dreamlike, out-of-focus images.
“I take the photographs I do because I am seduced by the forest as a particular manifestation of the primeval dispensation of living things; a place where living and dead coexist in a chaotic jumble, over the years blending harmoniously to create the world we find there […]”
