Kalika me Lama
Hanayo’s new photobook “Kalika me Lama” (“Silk and Light” in Hawaiian) is a palm-sized portal into the thick forests of Hawaii. Shot in Molokai, said to be the birthplace of hula, and in Hana at the eastern end of Maui, Hanayo condenses portraits, snapshots and landscape photographs into a rich, bright visual tapestry of mystery, reality, illusion and essence. She shares with us the nature she encountered and the people working to preserve and restore a lost culture.
The small size of the book asks the reader to come closer, to stare and to search, showing us that some things can only be seen if we try to see them.
