In a Landscape

In a Landscape

Satomi SAKUMA

Publisher: MAGUROBIYORI

“Like in the music of John Cage, I ebb and flow in the tide of impulse and discontinuity, freeing myself from the rules of perspective, logic and predication. Reality can be fluid and elusive. Some things need to be left unexplained. That way, I believe we can be free.”

After her geometry-focused book “◯△□”, Japanese photographer Satomi Sakuma’s new work “In a Landscape” is centered on color, illusion and coincidence. All photographs in the book were shot on film before undergoing Sakuma’s careful selection process. They show, once more, Sakuma’s strange talent to find graphical, two-dimensional coincidences within the scenery of reality, resulting in wildly stimulating, difficult-to-process photographs.
Two essays (in Japanese and English translation) by Chihiro Minato and Manabu Miki further explore the boundaries between senses, color, and reality in Sakuma’s work.
