"Good Night” is a quasi follow-up to Feng Li’s 2017 photobook “White Night.” While the latter consisted of color photographs, “Good Night” focuses entirely on Li’s spectacular black-and-white photographs from the streets of Chengdu in China. Despite the large amount of included photographs, Li is able to continuously surprise the reader with his captures. Ordinary and less ordinary sights are transformed into spectacle, imbued with a threatening sense or photographed with sheer fascination. The imagination, skill and sheer range of his techniques demand constant attention and engagement (what am I looking at? and why?) yet the experience is not of an overwhelming nature but of mystery, challenge and excitement.
