Images as black boxes of a complex and layered world

Hayate Ito’s photobook “Chronua” features a variety of visual styles and production processes, from entirely abstract, noise-like images to patterns, 3D-generated art and (relatively) straight-forwarded photography. Similar to his debut “I ate hay”, in which Ito presented an autobiography written in a kind of cypher, “Chronua” presents the viewer with a complex visual cascade. In his view, the artwork acts as a tool to help unravel the mystery of the world and the self. But what he offers is not merely a simple answer or solution to a riddle but fragments and aspects of a complex, multi-layered bizarre reality.
