Withering Field
The melancholy of visiting one’s hometown.
Yamaichi Naosuke’s photobook “Withering Field” shows a town in Japan after the seasons have changed; the fields have been harvested, the leaves blown off the trees, the colors gone. Reminded of the inverse-images captured in negatives, Naosuke photographed the town of his birth without nostalgia, without trying to sugarcoat its wintery gloom. “I have always thought of this inorganic yet organic world in black-and-white. And despite its scenery constantly undergoing change, the longer I stay away from it, the less it seems changed upon my return.” (from the artist’s afterword)
