— from the photographer’s description
In his books Stage (2011) and Singers & Stages (2013), Taiwanese artist Shen Jaolian has already grappled with regional festivals and ceremonies throughout Taiwan. Taiwanese Vaudeville Troupes continues the theme by focusing on the vaudeville and variety culture unique to Taiwan: since the 1970s, these singing and dancing troupes have become an integral part of important family celebrations and ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Shen Jaolian manages to capture the relationship between normal society and the world of vaudeville entertainment both from a macroscopic viewpoint and well-observed details.
All photos in the book are presented in monochrome high-screen print.
