Slow Boat
Kyoto-based print studio Benrido has created a portfolio of six collotype prints selected from Koji Onaka's "Slow Boat" series. Onaka, who began his career as a photographer in the 1980s, is known for his concise, melancholic style that conveys not only the subject at hand, but also atmospheres and moods. The featured prints are "Okayama Mizushima, 1993," "Chiba Kazusa-Ichinomiya, 1999," "Chiba Onjuku, 1999," "Aomori Ominato, 1996," "Hokkaido Oyubari, 1992," and "Aichi Kowa, 1989."
Collotype is one of the oldest photographic printing techniques and uses oil-based pigment inks. The process is revered for its excellent reproduction of color and gradation, the smoothness and depth of its texture, and its strong durability. Founded in Kyoto in 1905, Benrido Atelier is one of the most experienced collotype studios in the world.
