SINGAPORE’S VANISHED PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATES
With the book “Singapore’s Vanished Public Housing Projects,” photographers Koh Kim Chai and Eugene Ong attempt to remember twenty-seven early-era public housing estates by Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) and Housing Development Board (HDB) – all buildings that have long vanished.
Rather than through neatly prepared, repetitive and easy-to-ignore documentation, Kim Chai and Ong decided to approach the memory of the buildings through eviction notices, postcards, handwritten notes, old maps and other memorabilia scattered between the black-and-white photographs. “Singapore’s Vanished Public Housing Projects” manages to provide both extensive information on the buildings and their legacies as well as emphasize the social reverberations of architecture.
