Mononoke Kyoto

Takashi MURAKAMI

Publisher: Heibonsha

"Mononoke Kyoto" is the official catalogue for Takashi Murakami's major solo exhibition at the Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto (February 3 - September 1, 2024).

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist whose influence on the contemporary Japanese art scene cannot be overstated. Murakami's idea of the superflat, proposed in 2000, has sparked a postmodern art movement and opened up new ways of interpreting Japanese art, culture, and society.
The "Mononoke Kyoto" exhibition featured more than 170 works by the Japanese artist, most of which were new or never before exhibited in Japan. In the catalog, the works are presented individually, divided into eight chapters according to their location in the museum (Rooms 1-6, Central Hall, Japanese Garden), as well as through photographs of the exhibition itself in the back of the book. Notable works and series are introduced with brief explanatory texts, and in-depth essays by Shinya Takahashi, Akiko Miki, Mari Hashimoto, and a foreword and afterword by Takashi Murakami himself provide the reader with a deeper insight into Murakami's work and its place within Japanese art. The catalog also includes English translations of Murakami's works with Japanese text, photographs of the exhibition opening and gala dinner, and a list of the works included.
