Shingo Hiramatsu’s “Hanayaka na machi no naka de” (lit. “Inside Glorious Cities”) is a book of classic streetphotography. In sharp monochrome images, and not afraid of the darker shades of black, Hiramatsu shot street corners, portraits, odd situations and common sights in the cities of Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, focusing on their “Chinatown” areas. The photographs are presented in no particular order, mixing themes and locations, emphasizing differences and similarities.
