For more than ten years, Japanese photographer Kazuya Sudo has been photographing Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, a World Heritage Site and Buddhist temple with a history of more than 1200 years. The photobook “Gleam” condenses his work into a sublime photobook about the Buddhist statues that are part of the temple and the beauty of the landscape that surrounds it. In black-and-white photographs, Sudo conveys the detail and craftsmanship of the statues as objects, but also captures the serenity and religious meaning imbued in them.
