EGGS AND RARITIES
“Eggs and Rarities” is a retrospective of sorts – on request, Paul Kooiker compiled a collection of (unpublished) photographs taken during the past ten years of his career as well as a few new works. The photographs he chose build into a self-conscious examination of established photographic cliches. All genres are found here, from landscapes to portraits to nude shots and still lifes; the baby sitting in the bath, the train pulling into the station, the family having a picnic. Viewed in isolation, the photographs stand for themselves, as individual if somewhat mute works. In succession, however, they form a much more complex construct, one which the viewer might lose himself in. What is the context of these photos? Does it matter? Which photos are private? What at first seemed obvious and familiar soon becomes obscure.
