Color Approach (5)
Five motifs available
The “Color Approach” series consists of five collotype prints (each with an edition of five) made from positive film shot by Masahisa Fukase.
In 1962, the Camera Mainichi magazine commissioned Masahisa Fukase to illustrate the opening pages of its June to December issues with a series of color images. The original images were originally only published on the color pages of the respective Camera Mainichi issues. More than fifty years later, Kyoto-based printing atelier Benrido – together with the full support of Masahisa Fukase Archives – created the very first edition prints from Fukase’s series of 4x5 positive films.
“Surrealism’s legacy is found throughout art and poetry as a whole, even in the fields of design and film, but it scarcely features in photography apart from in some of Man Ray’s work. This notion is what inspired me to create this series …
“As I’m a photographer my protagonists are always those objects in my line of sight, but my brain is not content solely with what my eyes can see, which is why, at present, I’m experimenting with complex operations, such as the superimposition of several negatives, multiple exposures, the creation of blurred effects by deliberately slowing down the shutter speed, or even b holding my camera in the air without looking through the viewfinder. One might refer to it, somewhat daringly, as automatic writing – an attempt at expressing synchronicity or the different strata of existence.”
― Masahisa Fukase
Collotype is one of the oldest photographic printing technique and involves oil-based pigment inks. The process is revered for its excellent reproduction of colors and gradations, the smoothness and depth of its texture and its strong durability. Founded in Kyoto in 1905, Benrido Atelier is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
Each print has been posthumously stamped and numbered by the Masahisa Fukase Archives.
