Autrement qu’être
In his photobook “Autrement qu’être” (inspired by the title of a book by Emmanuel Levinas), the Japanese photographer Daisuke Morishita confronts themes of existence and death through black-and-white photographs that range from concrete visual subjects to abstract images. Although humans and other living creatures appear as subjects, Morishita’s photographs seem to regard them with the same importance and care as other (non-living) objects.
“This series aims to ‘externalize the concept of photography that has been stored in his body as a concrete object and transform it into a mysterious existence,’ and while maintaining a sense of realism, it also allows the viewer to land anywhere. It’s filled with an uneasy feeling. At the same time, it exudes the joy of not understanding.”
