Based in Japan’s Kansai region, Atelier Ricken Backer is a collective of young Japanese photographers. Through its self-organized and independent nature, Atelier Ricken Backer is able to highlight the perspectives of Japan's next generation of photographers, whose work may not yet have reached the collective consciousness defined by larger galleries and critics.
This first publication is based on the group's fourth exhibition (held in November 2024) and features the series "Was" by Ren Nomiyama, "Corals on Land" by Ayana Maoka, "Ulam Spirals" by Chiharu Sugihara, "Shimmer on Water" by Hinata Okazaki, and "Spring Awakening" by Natsuki Nagagaki.
“Like the lanes of an endless road, each thing moves along its own path, with its own length and width. From a distance, we can recognize these individual threads and movements as part of a single stream.
These photographs represent fragments of the accumulated shared memories that make up the world. Taken in isolation, each may appear to be nothing more than an insignificant piece. But they are all indispensable particles of the single mass of our world.”
― from Ren Nomiyama's statement
“I find great meaning in her visual language and choice of subjects. What are people in their teens and twenties curious about or suspicious of? How do they navigate the relationship between the individual and society, and how do they converse with the world through photography?
The role of the artist remains crucial as society changes and transforms in ever new ways. As new possibilities and values continue to emerge, photography proves to be a powerful tool for engaging, documenting, and shaping our world. It is our hope that Atelier Ricken Backer can serve as a cornerstone for this evolving dialogue.”
― from the afterword by Kohei Fukushima (President & Director, Atelier Ricken Backer)
