Sofia Coppola’s “Archive” collects artifacts, anecdotes, photographs, reference materials, correspondence, collages, scripts and other rarely seen behind-the-scenes documents related to each of the eight films she has directed to date, from her debut work “The Virgin Suicides” (1999), “Lost in Translation” (2003) to her latest work “Priscilla” (2023). Compiled and edited by Coppola herself, and featuring annotations and explanations throughout, “Archive” retraces the genesis of her works through the director’s eyes. In an interview with Sofia Coppola at the beginning of the book, writer Lynn Hirschberg further explores the work of the artist. Given the wealth of images and information, “Archive” is not only aimed at readers with an interest in Sofia Coppola’s work but forms an invaluable behind-the-scenes look at the process of creation that is as fascinating as it is rewarding.
