Yukichi WATABE
渡部雄吉
Yukichi Watabe was a Japanese photographer born in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture in 1924. 1943, he joined Tokyo Kōgakusha, a photography studio, and became a freelance photographer in 1950. 1992, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. 1993, he died.
His photographs of detectives investigating a murder case were published in the June 1958 issue of the magazine “Japan” (日本), and were compiled into the photo book “A Criminal Investigation” (Éditions Xavier Barral) in 2011, attracting renewed attention.

1924 - Born in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture
1943 - Joins the photography studio Tokyo Kogaisha
1947 - Becomes assistant to photographer Shigeru Tamura
1950 - Becomes freelance, publishes work in Gendai, Bungeishunju, Chuo Koron, and other general magazines
1959 - Participates in the International Biennial of Photography in Venice, and wins the Grand Prix in the News Photography category at the World Youth Peace Photo Exhibition in Vienna
1960 - Makes first trip abroad to Egypt and Africa
1962 - Interviews Alaskan Eskimos for the first issue of “Taiyo” magazine
1972 - Begins covering kagura, a folkloric event throughout Japan, for his book “Kagura"
1974 - Awarded the Photographic Society of Japan's annual award for his book “大いなるエジプト"
1989 - Awarded the Photographic Society of Japan's Annual Award and the Higashikawa Award for Domestic Artist of the Year for his book “Kagura”. Selected as one of 54 photographers in the world for the 150th anniversary of the birth of photography.
