Born in Hyogo, Japan.
Washio studied social science at Waseda university, After graduation, Washio have begun a self-taught photographic career.
Through long-term projects, Washio have continued to photograph the relationship between people and places. Especially both “cities” and “coastlines (oceans)” are key themes that Washio focusing on as a lifelong commitment. In the age of globalization, They can connect people , but also can isolate them at the same time and create boundaries.
As one of projects, “To the Sea” a collection of photographs taken along the coastline of Japan over 20 years, including the disaster situation after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (2011), was published as a photo book in 2014 , with a foreword by Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, a Nobel laureates in Literature. Works from this project has also been selected as one of the programs of the “Cultural Cities of East Asia” by ministers of culture from Japan, China, and Republic of Korea.
Most recently, Washio have published a photo book “Station” in 2020, portraits of refugees and migrants flooding into European cities. This project was exhibited at UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.
