They Called Me Yukari (New Edition)
For the first time in ten years, Tokyo-based publisher Zen Foto Gallery brings back Japanese photographer Hideka Tonomura’s 2013 photobook “They Called Me Yukari” in a new edition featuring several previously unreleased photographs.
Tonomura, then working as a hostess in a club in Kabukicho in Shinjuku, opens up a world of desire, despair, lust, power, eroticism and abuse. In moody, dark images, she relays her experiences in stories and little fictions, each imbued with their own layers.
“I hated this area so much that I wanted to burn it down, and I have vomited on it many times. I recognize the area as a dumpsite of human desire — the nightly parties were full of madness.
There was one girl who had a beautiful singing voice and an adorable smile. She died.
Her death faded into the parties — adapting to numbing senses is the only way to survive in this place. I learnt that human desire is terrifying — once you touch it, there is no turning back.”
