Masaki YAMAMOTO

Publisher: Zen Foto Gallery

Masaki Yamamoto’s new photobook “The Yamamotos” follows up on his sensational debut book “Guts” from 2017.

In black-and-white photographs, Yamamoto documents the daily life of his tightly-knit family – his parents, his sisters and brothers. Although this series begins after the family has moved from their previous one-room social housing apartment into a house nearby, the family appears to live as closely together as before. Yamamoto’s photographs do not shy away from intimate, unflattering or even shocking moments as the family continues to live in precarious conditions. At the same time, Yamamoto also manages to capture the love, care and togetherness that keeps the family functioning.

“Different worlds are hidden inside each of the houses that we pass by, and the Yamamotos are in one of these hidden corners. While my previous work ‘Guts’ was a reaffirmation of the habits and lifestyle of my own family, ‘The Yamamotos’ is my examination of the family in a new setting, after moving to a detached house. I hope that ‘The Yamamotos’ will enable people to see the family in a new way, and to reconsider their views on their own family.”
― from Masaki Yamamoto’s afterword (all text included in Japanese and English)
