Daido Moriyama’s “Plastic Love” follows previous entries “Boku”, “Lips! Lips! Lips!”, “Tights in Shimotakaido” and “Pantomime” in a series of mono-thematic hand-bound photobooks with silkscreen-printed covers.
For “Plastic Love”, Moriyama focuses on one of his favorite subjects – photographs of mannequins. The 51 photographs (some hidden inside fold-out pages) feature eery close-ups of plastic faces, mannequins (without arms, like the Venus de Milo) dressed and undressed, some covered in bondage-like ropework, exhibited in shopping windows or as part of everyday scenery, as if alive. Moriyama’s fascination transforms these mannequins into something beyond mere plastic.
