Land of Fusion
In "Land of Fusion," Japanese photographer Toshiki Nakanishi explores Hokkaido's deep past. After spending years researching, visiting, and photographing the remaining ruins and sites of the Okhotsk culture, which settled on Hokkaido's northern coast from the 5th to the 9th century AD, Nakanishi delves into the origins of the modern concept of "Hokkaido" as an island, questions how history is recorded, told, and remembered, and forges new connections between the contemporary world and the deep past.
The book includes essays by archaeologist and University of Tokyo professor Toshiaki Kumaki, curator Yuki Kajikawa, and Toshiki Nakanishi.
