An ode to the object

“100 Whanzines” is an anthology – or a Best of compilation – of the past five years of photographer Marius W Hansen’s “Whanzine” fanzine. In each issue, Hansen devotes himself to a singular theme, usually an object category (such as the strawberry, the flower, lids, the German drink “Spezi,” or hands), a place (Munich, Paris, Milano) or, on special occasions, a specific person (such as artist and designer Helmut Lang). According to the respective theme, Hansen (whose commercial clients range from i-D magazine to Dior, Hermès and Costa Brazil) explores and compares his subjects, tries out objective approaches or lets his subjective experience enter the pictures.

“‘100 Whanzines’ is an anthology of five years of my own fanzine publications. The book includes 552 pages of reproductions from each of the 100 zine releases.

The book offers a comprehensive photographic exploration of a diverse range of objects. These come from a variety of sources, such as my commercial projects, holiday snaps and my own and borrowed collections.

As a commercial photographer, having the freedom to produce new images through these fanzines has been deeply gratifying.”
