Ai Iwane’s photobook “KIPUKA” and her exhibition “FUKUSHIMA ONDO”, which focus on the o-bon dance ceremonies taking place each year in Hawaii, have been chosen as the winner of the 44th (2018) Kimura Ihei Photography Award.

KIPUKA by Ai Iwane

Hawaii is populated by a large proportion of Japanese immigrants. They have brought parts of their culture with them: the islands feature shrines and temples, and Bon dances – festivals during which one’s ancestors are honored – have developed and evolved here independently. In her photographs, Iwane focuses on the “Fukushima Ondo”, a song which originated in a region devastated by the 2011 natural disasters and continues to unite the Hawaii immigrants with their past. Taken over a period of twelve years, Iwane’s mix of portraits, landscapes and snapshots tells a story of uprootedness and combines the song’s evocative powers with the memories of the land. The title “Kipuka” is a word from the Hawaiian language, meaning “place of new life.”
