Photo Gallery International

Photo Gallery International opened in Toranomon, Tokyo in 1979 as a pioneering commercial gallery specializing in photography, following a chance encounter between the great American photographer Ansel Adams and owner Yasuhiko Sata. In 2015, the gallery moved to its current location in Higashi Azabu and changed its name to PGI.
Since its opening, PGI has introduced works by many outstanding foreign artists, mainly from the U.S., including West Coast photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, as well as Harry Callahan, Robert Adams, Joseph Sudek, and Emmet Gowin.
We have also worked with domestic artists from the time they were newcomers, such as Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Kikuji Kawada, Kazutaka Narahara, and Eikoh Hosoe, who represented postwar Japan, and up-and-coming photographers such as Kozo Miyoshi, Michiko Kon, and Yoshihiko Ito.
Since 2003, we have focused more on discovering young talent and have welcomed new artists such as Shintaro Sato, Yuji Hamada, and Taku Arai. In recent years, we have been exhibiting at the AIPAD PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW, introducing excellent Japanese photographic works to overseas collectors, museums, universities, and other institutions.
