Torikumo
Haruka Fujita’s “Torikumo” is an ambitious study of the delicate beauty of the natural sceneries found in Japan’s Tohoku region, the place she calls home. The title itself is a term borrowed from the poetic tradition of the haiku and refers to the sight of migratory birds disappearing into the clouds, signaling the arrival of spring.
Working in relation to traditional Japanese themes and aesthetics, Fujita regards wintery forest scenes, majestic animals, flowers, water drops frozen in time and the complex contours of mountain ridges. For the prints, Fujita captured old gold- and silver-leafed sliding panels, printed the images on photographic paper, and used that as the base for her photographs. The process lends her work a mysterious, multi-faceted ambience in which colors act as harmonic elements and the subjects are allowed room to breathe.
