To Row the Wind

Takao HASHIMOTO

Publisher: Mo chuisle

In 2005, Takao Hashimoto took in a dog that had been badly hit by a car. He named him Fuu and nursed him back to health, although his hind legs would never quite work again. They soon moved from Fukuoka to Osaka, then to Tokyo and finally to Berlin. “To Row the Wind” tells Fuu’s lifestory in 262 photographs, from his brief time in Fukuoka to the many years spent in Berlin, ending with a touching few photographs depicting Fuu’s absence in his favorite walking spots.

“I began taking these photographs as Fuu recovered at our home in Fukuoka and slowly regained the ability to walk.
When I photographed Fuu, I didn’t do so with the intention of creating art.
I simply accompanied Fuu wherever his legs took him, drifting in his wind, photographing whatever we saw along the way.”
― from Takao Hashimoto’s afterword (translation by shashasha)

The book ends with a long essay in which Hashimoto looks back on his time with Fuu (all text only included in Japanese).
