To look without fear
Highly comprehensive look at the polymath artist’s wide-ranging career
Published on occasion of the same-titled exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, “To Look Without Fear” features written contributions by more than a dozen writers, thinkers, curators, critics as well as Tillmans himself to survey, analyze and contextualize the outstanding oeuvre of this exceptional artist in its many facets. Since the early 1990s, Tillmans has continuously explored what it means to engage with the world through images. His work transcends genres and disciplines, ranging from still lifes to social documentary, from architectural studies to nightlife shots, from intimate nudes to abstract images.
Richly illustrated and split into fifteen chapters, the contributors Quentin Bajac, Yve-Alain Bois, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Clément Chéroux, Durga Chew-Bose, Stuart Comer, Keller Easterling, Paul Flynn, Sophie Hackett, Michelle Kuo, Oluremi C. Onabanjo, Phil Taylor, Andrew Vielkind and the artist himself provide invaluable insight into Tillmans’ works, his artistic processes and his impact on the worlds of photography and art.
