The Darkening Planet
“The Darkening Planet” by award-winning poet and photographer Lui Waitong features photographs taken during journeys in the past ten years.
Split into more than a dozen chapters (‘London’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Harbin’, ‘Xiamen’, ‘Tokyo’ etc.), each featuring a short poem, the book presents a collection of ambiguous moment taken from the position of a wanderer, with no claim to document reality. The title refers to a Japanese word that describes the moment when the sky begins to grow dark and dusk sets in — the time of day when ghosts and demons start to materialize in this world.
“In this collection of photographs, there is a world that is ordinary and nearly has no people. As this planet gradually darkens, the photographer does not slow down his shutter speed. He only wants to shoot darkness.”
