Silence of Tokyo
When the state of emergency was declared in Tokyo in April 2020 due to the corona pandemic, photographer Kazuyuki Kawaguchi decided to capture the Japanese capital holding its breath. “Silence of Tokyo” captures the Asian megalopolis in a state rarely seen: almost completely devoid of people. As Tokyo’s citizens practiced self-restraint, Kawaguchi found himself able to capture Tokyo’s busiest streets and districts – Shibuya, Shinjuku, Shimbashi, Ikebukuro and more – in eerily empty, solemn quietude. With his photographs, Kawaguchi manages to make a statement about Tokyo as a city as well as the far-reaching consequences of the corona pandemic.
