“Shinzo” (“Heart”) is Japanese photographer Kaho Okazaki’s debut photobook. Her imaginative images emphasize the flatness of photography while capturing momentary glimpses of ordinary life – apples in a fridge, a car covered in a protective plastic sheet, the interplay of a car exhaust with the green moss on the asphalt below it and so on – that seem like fragments hinting at a greater story. With airiness and pale, restrained tones, Okazaki’s work pursues seeing without knowing, gives precedence to feelings over reason.
