6 Collotype Prints

Fan Ho (1931–2016) counts among Hong Kong’s most important artists. His photographs have defined not only how Hong Kong has been perceived by the world but also influenced Hong Kong’s own vision and memory of itself. His brilliantly composed images capture Hong Kong’s cityscape and daily life as it rose to economic prominence as a British colony in the post-war era. This portfolio of collotype prints, created in collaboration with the Fan Ho Foundation and Blue Lotus Gallery, features the six works “Approaching Shadow” (1954), “Street Scene” (1956), “As Evening Hurries By” (1955), “Dream of Old Hong Kong” (1957/2014), “Crossboat” (1957), and “Whitty Street Diary” (1950s/60s).

Collotype, one of the oldest techniques of creating photographic prints, is a printing process that involves oil-based pigment inks. The technique is revered for its excellent reproducibility, the smoothness and depth of its textures and its strong durability. It is often employed for the reproduction of important cultural works.
Benrido, founded in 1905 in Kyoto, is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
