Known for his images which question mankind’s relationship with the environment, Naoya Hatekeyama’s Rikuzentaka is a far more symbolic exploration into his personal landscape and memory. Born in Rikuzentaka, Iwate, Japan in 1958 Hatekeyama’s home town was completely destroyed through the wake of the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. Taking away the physical structures of his home city, the disaster also destroyed his home and took the life of his mother. Rikuzentaka intimately evokes the grand narrative of humanity’s interaction with the environment, providing readers a visual glimpse into the after effects of the disaster from 2011-2014.
