The OL from Shimane
Blasting stereotypes away with humor, one photograph after the other
The word “OL,” the Office Lady, conjures up a certain image both in appearance and character; neat, quiet, obedient, unimposing, unthreateningly female. With her photobook “The OL from Shimane,” Japanese photographer engages the stereotype with humor and playfulness.
Originally attracted to the “un-OL-likeness” of one of her models, Minami began shooting the series in 2017 in different locations in Shimane Prefecture. Juxtaposing the clean business suit outfit of her models with unusual poses, situations and backgrounds, Minami crashes ordinary and extraordinary, coincidence and inevitability.
