Kochi Nights
German photographer Hans-Christion Schink’s “Kochi Night” is an atmospheric examination of the Indian city’s streets at night.
Originally intending to photograph Kochi with a large-format camera under an overcast sky, adverse weather conditions forced Schink to choose a different approach. Fascinated by the atmosphere of the city at night illuminated only by street lights, Schink decided to rely on the artificial light of the city for this series, noting in his foreword: “I had already dealt with the fascinating way that reality seems to shift by processing light differently through the human eye and the camera in my earlier work.”
In the artificial yet diegetic lighting conditions, Schink engages Kochi in atmospheric (sometimes eery) complex images of a city whose history is still ever-present in its landscape.
