Ikeda
Haruhiko Ikeda is part of a rare breed of Japanese craftsmen: dedicated to his craft, with no interest in fame or fortune. With skills and sensibilities honed over decades, he creates masterpieces in metal whose ingenuity and raw beauty make them more works of art than commodities.
"Ikeda," produced by the Kyoto-based design studio Shokodo, presents a selection of his creations in photographs. Designed to reflect the attention and care Ikeda puts into his own work, the book also includes a lengthy interview (in Japanese and English) that explores Ikeda's journey and philosophy.
“This world contains masterpieces that will never be discovered. They are made by master craftsmen who care little for fame or wealth, as part of an endless process to refine their skills. Neither meant to be exhibited nor shown, these masterpieces are often lost when their creator dies.
When we came across Haruhiko Ikeda's work, we felt an overwhelming sense of duty. His work needed to be known and preserved, even if he didn't want to be in the spotlight. It was difficult to convince him, but in the end it seems that our determination resonated with him.
He is part of a long tradition of artisans who have spent thousands of hours practicing their craft and studying the masters who came before them. His work is reflected in the beauty of his objects. In another time, people like him were compared to the noble beauty of the chrysanthemum.”
