This mini-portfolio by Benrido Atelier features a selection of six Collotype prints by Japanese master photographer Shoji Ueda. Taken between the 1950s and the 1980s, the six black-and-white images are exemplary of Ueda’s surrealist imagery, his sophisticated sense of composition and the sand dune as one of the recurring motifs in his work.
The photographs in this mini-portfolio are titled “Sea”, “Flock of Birds”, “From series ‘Mode in Dunes’”, “Dunes, Portrait of Soji Yamakawa” and “Still Life”.

Collotype, one of the oldest techniques of creating photographic prints, is a printing process that involves oil-based pigment inks. The technique is revered for its excellent reproducibility, the smoothness and depth of its textures and its strong durability. It is often employed for the reproduction of important cultural works. Benrido, founded in 1905 in Kyoto, is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
