‘Decommissioning Fukushima’ is part artful photobook, part journalistic record: Japanese photographer Joe Nishizawa has documented the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plant since 2014. The nuclear power plant came into international attention after the March 2011 tsunami caused nuclear meltdowns.
In over 150 photographs, some featuring extensive explanations and commentary in English and Japanese, Nishizawa tells the story of the continuing decommissioning work.

“The purpose of this photodocumentary is not to express an opinion. I simply want to provide materials that individuals who are unable to go to the site itself can use to form their own opinions. […]
“In editing this photobook, I prepared explanatory notes for each photograph that include information that only someone who has been to the site would know and things that I felt when I was on site. This is because I wanted, as much as possible, to convey the raw atmosphere of the sites.”
